Bejing 2008 Olympics

August 8, 2008

I'm typing this blog post while the Olympics opening ceremony is running. This is an interesting event so I can not forget to write about it.

It's Wonderful

Yes, this Olympic opening ceremony is wonderful. It did respresent China and it's wish for the future. It's:

  1. Colorful
  2. Beautiful
  3. Hi-tech
  4. Well-performed
  5. Well-organized
  6. Meaningful (the kids)
  7. Lovely
  8. Expensive

The Chosen Date and Time

Guess what, the Olympic start exactly at 2008-8-8 8:00pm, in other writting rule it's 8pm 08/08/2008.

It's not 8:08:08pm 08/08/2008 as I expected when hearing from a kid. That's something disappointing because that time have more 8 than the official start time.

At first I thought that they only considered that 8, Chinese pronouciation as "bat", and English meaning "grow". I don't know who wrote about the no.8 as "lucky":

The opening ceremony of the Olympics in Beijing will be held in the Beijing National Stadium, and begin at 8:00pm CST (UTC+8) on 8 August 2008.[95] The choice of date and time (2008-08-08 8:00) reflects the fact that the number 8 is considered lucky in China.[a]

What I know, is 8 means grow, getting bigger, more, better, etc. It's a wish for more money, more love, more luck, more health, etc.

That's not all. I also consider the 24h rule and that 8pm become 20 o'clock. So what I see are the number 08 and 20 has been chosen as the only 2 numbers.

But now, looking at the number 2, it's the numbered word for "ai", English meaning "love". So I can conclude this date was Chosen because it's "Love Grows", or "More Love".

The Vietnamese Team

Since I'm a Vietnamese I would like to introduce our country as from the official Olympic site:

Vietnam has sent modest athlete delegations to most Summer Games since its first appearance at the 1952 Olympic Games in Helsinki, Finland. Swimming, athletics and the combat sports of boxing, Taekwondo and judo are the favoured sports of Vietnam athletes. Indeed, it was in Taekwondo that the country earned its first and to date only Olympic medal. Tran Hieu Ngan made it to the final of the women's featherweight event at the 2000 Games in Sydney, Australia and won silver.

I wish Vietnamese Team shall win some medals this Olympic. So far they had only one Silver medal in the Olympics since 1952. That's not a good achievement at all, but I do believe, they will gain more as the country's economy grows. In the past Vietnam was too poor to compete with other countries.

My Wish

I have 5 wishes:

  1. I wish everyone enjoy this Olympics.
  2. I wish China will play fair.
  3. I wish Vietnam could win some medals.
  4. I wish there are no accidents.
  5. I wish I could be there.

I want to talk more about my 5th wish. I'm in China right now. Unfortunately Bejing is too far from where I'm staying now. I have no conditions to join this event. So sad.

    My finding:
    1. China has won the most medal in Olympics 2008. Question: Is it fair?
    2. The start time of Olympics in Bejing is 2008/08/08 08:08:08 All 8, even the seconds.

Got something to say?
